Gear up for Everest Day 2024! Organised by the Non-Resident Nepali Association of New Zealand (NRNA NZ), this vibrant event commemorates the historic ascent of Mount Everest on 29th of May 1953, by Sir Edmund Hillary of Aotearoa New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal.
On that triumphant day, their success was a culmination of careful planning, indomitable spirit, and a deep respect for each other’s skills. It’s said they spent about 15 minutes on the summit, capturing the moment with photographs and leaving offerings – a small cross, some chocolates, and biscuits to honour the mountain.
Norgay and Hillary’s climb was the product of international cooperation, collaboration, and friendship, and left a longstanding legacy of friendship and a strong bond between Aotearoa and Nepal.
Coming back to the upcoming celebration – expect a series of engaging events featuring cultural performances, mountaineering discussions, and opportunities to explore the countries' shared heritage and mutual interest in tourism and adventure sport. Whether you’re a history buff or a trekking enthusiast, or simply looking for a way to experience Nepali culture, make your way to this event!
Mark your calendars for the 25th of May 2024, and make your way to Windsor Park Baptist Church, Mairangi Bay, Northshore, Auckland 0754, from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
