Northland is currently experiencing strong winds and heavy rain - definitely not ideal weather for outdoor plans! If you’re in Auckland and watching the rain change your weekend ideas, don’t worry. This is a great chance to look ahead and plan something enjoyable for Auckland Anniversary Weekend instead.

Let’s Start with the Basics
Auckland is often called the “City of Sails.” This nickname comes from our unique location between two harbours - the Manukau in the west, and the Waitemata and Hauraki Gulf in the east. Because of this, Auckland has many boat clubs, marinas, and sailing areas. Our boats, yachts, and waterfront life are a big part of Tāmaki Makaurau’s culture and history.
What’s On to Celebrate?
Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta – Monday, 26 January 2026
In 2026, Auckland will celebrate the 186th Anniversary Day Regatta, one of the oldest and largest one-day sailing events in the world. It marks the founding of Auckland and is a special day for locals and visitors alike.
The best part?
✅ Free to watch
✅ Family-friendly
✅ Easy to enjoy without a boat
What You’ll See on the Water
Tugboat Race – Large working tugboats racing through the harbour. Very loud and exciting.
Classic Launch Race – Beautiful old wooden boats with lots of history.
Classic & Modern Yachts – Traditional sailing yachts alongside modern racing boats.
Foiling Classes – Fast boats like Waszps and Moths that lift above the water and appear to “fly.”
Waka Ama & Dragon Boat Racing – Team paddling races with amazing energy, especially around the Viaduct Harbour.
Mini Yacht Racing – Small radio-controlled boats that are fun to watch.
Best Free Places to Watch
You don’t need tickets or special equipment. These spots are easy to access and free:
Westhaven Breakwater & Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron – Great for the start and finish of races.
Westhaven Promenade – A nice walk with views of the harbour and mini yacht races.
Princes Wharf & Queens Wharf – Central location with lots of activity.
Viaduct Harbour – Best for waka ama, dragon boat racing and atmosphere.
Bastion Point or North Head (Maungauika) – Higher viewpoints with wide harbour views.
It’s a wet and windy weekend – Please take care!
Wear warm, waterproof clothing
Carry an umbrella or rain jacket
Avoid slippery rocks or edges near the water
Check weather updates before heading out!!
If conditions are too bad, it’s okay to enjoy parts of the day indoors - safety comes first.
If you’re too lazy to plan, here’s something to consider -
Day 1:
· Stay in, cook a simple meal with flatmates / whānau
· Watch a movie or explore free online events
Day 2:
· Visit a museum (Auckland Museum often has free or discounted entry for locals and students)
· Walk around the waterfront when weather allows
Anniversary Day (Monday):
· Pack food from home
· Take public transport to the city
· Watch the regatta from a free viewing spot
· Head home early if the weather changes
Auckland Anniversary Weekend is a great way to learn more about the city, enjoy local culture, and spend time with friends - without spending much money. Whether the sun is out or the rain is around, there’s always a safe and simple way to enjoy the long weekend.
