On October 1, the world observes the International Day of Older Persons—a day to honour the legacy, contributions, and dignity of our elders. It is a gentle reminder to all of us in Aotearoa and beyond: our older people are not just recipients of care, but the bearers of wisdom, love, and lived experience.
Last week, our Rōpū Waiata – AKA Performing Group visited two aged care facilities, carrying not just guitars and poi, but aroha in every note they sang. More than a performance, it was a celebration of connection across generations, across cultures, and across journeys. This visit also aligned with Diversional and Recreational Therapy Awareness Week, marking 33 years of DRT as an incorporated body in Aotearoa. We took this opportunity not only to celebrate with residents, but to recognise the incredible mahi of Diversional and Recreational Therapists, whose role is to help our older adults continue doing the things they love despite age, illness, or loss.
For our students, many of whom are training to become care workers in the health and wellbeing sector, the experience was powerful. It reminded them that care is not only about physical support it’s also about uplifting spirits, listening to stories, and bringing joy into everyday moments.
At AKA Education Group, we are proud to be raising up future carers who understand the value of dignity, creativity, and cultural responsiveness in aged care. Our Rōpū Waiata continues to be a living expression of these values, where learning is hands-on, hearts are engaged, and every song has meaning.
To our kaumātua, thank you for paving the way. To our DRT professionals, thank you for making life more meaningful every day. And to our students, may you always carry this purpose with you wherever you go.
Me āta whāngai i te koroua, i te kuia – Hei tohu aroha mō rātou i hīkoi i mua i a tātou.
Let us nurture our elders – a gesture of love for those who walked before us.
Don't forget to check out some photos of our awesome crew!
