Matariki 2026 - Learning Together, Growing Together

Matariki 2026 was a truly meaningful journey for our AKA Education Group Diversional and Recreational Therapy team. Rather than simply celebrating the Māori New Year, we spent time learning, practising, and reflecting on what Matariki represents and how these values can shape us as future health and wellbeing professionals in Aotearoa New Zealand.

In the weeks leading up to our facility visits, we gathered regularly to practise our waiata and poi, learn the stories behind Matariki, and understand the cultural significance of what we would be sharing. We learned the pūrākau of Matariki, which tells the story of the Matariki star cluster and the significance of each of the nine stars, including their connections to the environment, remembrance, wellbeing, aspirations, and the cycles of life. Sharing this pūrākau helped us appreciate that Matariki is not only a time of celebration but also a time to remember those who have passed, give thanks for the present, and look forward with hope for the future. We spent time supporting one another, refining our performances, and building the confidence to share these experiences with residents and their whānau. These practices were about much more than preparing for a performance. They strengthened our teamwork, deepened our appreciation for te ao Māori, and reminded us that meaningful cultural engagement begins with learning, respect, and a willingness to grow.

As a team of eleven from diverse cultural backgrounds, we learned alongside one another throughout this journey. Everyone contributed their time, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn, creating a supportive environment where we could grow together. Tina, the only member of our team with Māori whakapapa, shared valuable cultural knowledge and personal insights that enriched our understanding of Matariki, while each of us brought our own perspectives from India, the Philippines, Nepal, China, Vietnam, and Aotearoa New Zealand. Together, we discovered that cultural safety begins with openness, respect, and a genuine commitment to learning from one another.

During our visits to Ryman Logan Campbell Retirement Village, Freeling Holt House, CHT St Johns Care Home, and Rosedale Village & Alden Ultimate Care Home, we had the privilege of celebrating Matariki with residents, staff, and whānau through waiata, poi, sharing the pūrākau of Matariki, meaningful conversations, and engaging activities. As we shared the story of the nine stars and their meanings, many residents reflected on loved ones they had lost, expressed gratitude for their families and friendships, and spoke about their hopes for the future. Every visit was unique, but each one reminded us of the power of connection. The warmth with which we were welcomed, the stories that were shared, and the joy expressed through smiles, laughter, singing, and participation reinforced the importance of creating meaningful experiences that promote wellbeing, belonging, and quality of life.

For many of us, this was more than a learning activity. It was an opportunity to step outside our comfort zones, learn from one another, and experience firsthand the importance of providing culturally safe and meaningful opportunities for the people we support. As future Diversional and Recreational Therapists, these experiences have strengthened our understanding that cultural responsiveness is not simply a professional expectation but an essential part of building genuine connections with individuals, whānau, and communities.

As we reflect on this year's Matariki celebrations, we are grateful for the knowledge we have gained, the relationships we have strengthened, and the memories we have created together. We carry these experiences forward as we continue our journey, committed to honouring the cultures of Aotearoa and creating inclusive, meaningful experiences that support the wellbeing of others.

Your kindness, participation, and stories made this year's Matariki an unforgettable experience for our team. We also thank everyone at AKA Education Group who supported and encouraged us throughout this journey.
